Ambergris
As it turns out, ambergris has been highly coveted for centuries. Even though the substance is known for its appalling smell – “like a cross between squid and farmyard manure”, its odor becomes sweeter as time passes. For hundreds of years, it has been used in different expensive perfumes. Some historians even believe that it is edible.

Whale By-Product
Ambergris is actually a whale by-product. The substance is produced in whales’ bile ducts before it gets excreted. This may sound pretty nasty, but it’s found in nature really rarely, so it’s worth a lot to the right people. The fact that Steven and Viola just stumbled across it on their walk on the beach means that the couple was really lucky. There was a catch, though.
