Sperm Whales
Only the sperm whales produce ambergris. This species of whales is found in oceans around the globe, including Britain’s coastal waters. Sperm whales can weigh over 63 tons and can grow to a length of 67 feet. Although the populations of these whales have increased, they have not always been so prolific.

Endangered
In the past, it was common to hunt sperm whales for their blubber. The substance was used to make various things, including soap, candles, machine oil and even pencils. Ambergris was also harvested due to its scent. Unfortunately, roughly a million whales were killed during the 19th and 20th centuries. Finally, whaling was banned starting in the 1980s. This included ambergris.
